If any woman drinks for instance half a liter of beer, she could expect in some time growth in her waist, about ten centimeters. Men have it little better, their average growth is smaller, only around six centimeters. The research showed, that during development of “beer belly” it doesn't matter on how much the man drinks in total per year, but how he drinks.
It is because of sudden drinking
Scientists believe that they finally found the reason, why drinking alcohol leads to fat deposition especially in the area of waist and abdomen.
It looks like beer belly formation happens mostly, when you drink larger amount of alcohol at one time. That's why men, who drinks two beer daily doesn't notice any changes on their figure.
These findings are based on study of nearly 30 000 people in years from 2002 to 2005, which was performed by scientists at University College London. They examined men and women in ages of 45 to 69 from Poland, Russia and Czech Republic.
It showed that beer belly appears to be mostly in sudden drinkers, people who at least once per month drinks really great amount of alcohol. There was one fifth of sudden drinkers in examined group. Men put on about 6 centimeters in waist, women about 10 centimeters.
Amount doesn't matter
Research also showed, that effect of sudden drinking is not related to the total amount of alcohol, which has been drunk over the year.
“It's not about total amount, but how you drink,” tells professor Martin Bobak, who lead the study. He also adds that women usually puts on in waist more because they are smaller and lighter than men.
